Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is a new, award-winning protocol which was researched and developed by reflexology practitioner, researcher, educator and author Sally Kay during her work with cancer patients. This reflexology technique stimulates the lymphatic reflexology points on the feet and hands in a unique sequence which aids the function of the lymphatic system. Sally Kay discovered that RLD had a significant effect on the reduction of swelling and the drainage of fluid with patients suffering with lymphedema.
This method assists with lymphedema and lipedema and has been used in lieu of whole-body manual lymphatic drainage treatments, a technique which is specifically focused on the lymph vessels to help the flow of lymphatic fluid. RLD follows the basic techniques of manual lymphatic drainage and helps many conditions, including lymphedema, lipo-lymphedema, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia.
PLEASE NOTE: There are several contraindications to RLD and to any other reflexology protocol in general. Those conditions are cellulitis, deep venous thrombosis, kidney failure, or any unstable heart condition.
The lymphatic system relies solely on bodily movement for the lymph fluid to move, unlike the cardiovascular system, and plays a key role in the immune system. Targeting the key areas of the feet corresponding to the lymphatics is a very effective way of stimulating the body’s own response to reduce swelling, clear out toxins and blockages, and boost our ability to fight infection. RLD helps to boost the lymphatic system; those who feel sluggish or lethargic and find it difficult to get going in the morning can utilize RLD to help them feel more energetic.
RLD is a complementary modality and can be used in addition to standard medical treatments; it is NOT a substitute for medical advice or treatment from a qualified physician or other medical practitioner. It is NOT a diagnostic system. Always consult your medical practitioner for medical advice and treatment.
Lymphatic drainage massage is used to treat conditions other than lymphedema, and reflexology lymph drainage may be used similarly. It may be useful with the following conditions:
What is an RLD treatment like?
Treatments last approximately one hour. The first visit is a bit longer as it includes reviewing the medical history and taking measurements. If you have lipedema or lymphedema, the affected extremities will be measured with a tape measure so that I can estimate and record the volume of fluid.
RLD treatment then takes place on the feet and/or the hands. It is a gentle pressure which is placed on specific points along the feet and/or hands. Reflexology connects spots on the outside of your body to the inside and is a bit like acupressure.
The affected extremities will be measured again at certain treatment intervals in order to determine any difference in fluid volume; this is particularly useful to assess the progression over time.
To ensure full benefits, the following items are recommended for 24 hours following treatment:
